RETURN THE FAVOR… WITH FLAVORS!
February 14 goes hand-in-hand with Valentine’s Day. Red and pink are the quintessential colors of the occasion, symbolic of love, warmth and passion. But did you know that on March 14, countries such as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and others, have also celebrated another similar tradition known as White Day?
Valentine’s Day in Japan traditionally has women giving the gifts, chocolates for instance, to men. It wasn’t until the late 1970s, when a day to reciprocate was created. White Day is now a way for men to return the favor to women, friends, even coworkers, who gave them Valentine’s Day gifts.
Initially, gifts (food or other items) bestowed upon others were usually white in color, symbolic of purity, but that gift characteristic is not strictly adhered to nowadays. Conventional confections include cookies, candy and marshmallows, so we thought we’d offer some suggestions for anyone who would like to say on March 14: “Thank you for the lovely Valentine’s gift!”
