Assistant Controller 

Location: 

Hilo, Hawaii (on The Big Island)

Big Island Candies is seeking an Assistant Controller to help in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities and procedures in financial management and accounting, as well as to participate and direct in the preparation and analysis of various financial reports of company financial data.

Essential duties include:

  • Perform daily accounting processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger transactions;
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports;
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of financial information;
  • Perform monthly analysis of revenue, expense, inventory and budget variances, and identify reasons for differences;
  • Prepare routine financial reports, as well as reports for operational review and decision making;
  • Assist with the completion and preparation of monthly financial reports.

Skills, qualifications and attributes include: 

  • Be a Licensed Certified Public Accountant, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting;
  • Have a minimum five (5) years of experience in tax or audit;
  • Must possess leadership ability, a passion for excellence and strong team-building skills to effectively direct and supervise personnel, and to interact with all levels of management;
  • The desire and willingness to lead, offer direction and opinions, accept feedback;
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles, and be willing to collaborate with team members, or work independently, to incorporate them into existing practices;

Purchasing & Inventory Manager

Big Island Candies is seeking a Purchasing & Inventory Manager to lead, direct and oversee purchasing, inventory and warehouse functions, in accordance with Company guidelines, policies and procedures.

Essential duties include:

  • Make purchases necessary for the operation of the Company, and maintaining inventory of the items purchased;
  • Negotiate vendor terms and prices, and arrange deliveries using knowledge of schedule requirements;
  • Develop and adhere to systems to track inventory of necessary operating supplies, materials, raw materials and finished goods;
  • Assist in the development of purchasing and inventory management policies; carry out warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures, as well as devise methods to optimize inventory control procedures;
  • Ensure forecasts and purchase orders are effectively communicated to suppliers;
  • Coordinate between accounting, purchasing, warehouse and factory, regarding inventory control and reporting;
  • Foster and develop a strong team of warehouse personnel through recruitment, thorough and consistent on-boarding process, training, coaching, as well as addressing competency gaps with the team;
  • Supervise employees and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the department; carry out supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; taking disciplinary and/or corrective action when needed; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance;
  • Be knowledgeable of purchase orders, receipts of goods, invoices and returns in accounting system; maintain purchasing and account records (inventory & vendor) in Excel spreadsheets, as well as other data entry into computer systems; analyze inventory flow and projections; research, verify and solve pricing discrepancies;
  • Be informed and stay current regarding market conditions, and communicate them to the team; prepare reports on raw-material costs.

Skills, qualifications, and attributes include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in purchasing, inventory, warehousing, supply chain and logistics management, preferably in food manufacturing operations, or a closely related field;
  • Possess the initiative, and good problem-solving skills, to identify, anticipate and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully;
  • Strong organizational skills to efficiently prioritize and plan work activities and time management;
  • Excellent professional communication skills, including the ability to express well-reasoned, independent thought; natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organization levels and with external contacts;
  • Be accurate, thorough and detail-oriented in monitoring your own work to ensure quality; apply feedback to improve performance;
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment, and adapt to changing priorities, for example, if work processes require changes to improve efficiency;
  • Must have supervisory experience, including but not limited to knowledge of employment laws;
  • Have the ability to practice a high level of confidentiality;

Food Safety and Quality Manager

Big Island Candies is seeking a Food Safety and Quality Manager to become an integral part of our team by:

1)    Executing a set of activities and tests designed to ensure all processes and products are adequate to meet all of the objectives set forth in Big Island Candies’ Quality Management Program, including Preventive Controls and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

2)    Possessing the skills and knowledge of laboratory equipment and procedures needed to design and perform various analytical laboratory tests on incoming ingredients and finished products, as well as to conduct environmental testing. 

3)    Exhibiting strong verbal and written communication skills, which are needed to work in a team environment with both management and production employees.

4)    Being able to collect and organize quality and production data, to interpret that data, and to correct issues if the results warrant such action.

5)    Being proficient in the use of the Internet to research information, as well as in Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.

Bachelor of Science degree, relevant experience in the food manufacturing industry and some professional laboratory experience are preferred.

We are seeking a Production Manager for our Celebrations department who will uphold the brand’s standard for producing high-quality products and delivering high-level customer service. Requirements include: Manage special projects, day-to-day operations and seasonal planning, with regards to our specialty-gift program, with a focus on production and inventory management; supervise team to produce elegant, high-quality specialty-gift items.

Essential duties include:

  • Plan and prepare with Celebrations Manager the production of numerous specialty-gift items according to specified deadlines, such as but not limited to rush projects;
  • Schedule sufficient staff to meet daily and weekly operational needs;
  • Motivate, train and manage staff to ensure cohesive, efficient production team;
  • Create, administer, update and maintain employee training program;
  • Receive and check in merchandise (including, but not limited to, a variety of gift packaging and accessories), and perform quality inventory-control check;
  • Manage inventory to meet planned stock levels and to change/adjust accordingly to meet consumer demand.

Qualifications and attributes include:

  • Must possess supervisor and management experience, leadership ability and effective team-building skills to direct personnel, as well as to interact with all levels of management;
