Accounting Clerk


Hilo, Hawaii (on The Big Island)


Big Island Candies is seeking an additional Accounting Clerk to provide accounting and clerical assistance to our Accounting department.

Essential duties include:

  • Perform daily accounting processes, including accounts receivable and accounts payable;
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of financial information;
  • Perform monthly analysis of revenue, expense, inventory and budget variances, and identify reasons for differences;
  • Prepare routine financial reports, as well as reports for operational review and decision making;
  • Assist with the completion and preparation of monthly financial reports;
  • Assist with calling in orders, as well as other Purchasing-related functions.

Skills, qualifications and attributes include:

  • Associate degree or two years’ work experience in Accounting preferred;
  • Exceptional organizational skills with a keen eye for details, accuracies and meeting deadlines;
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment, and adapt to rapidly changing priorities;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to perform job functions;
  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills; interact with others in a positive and professional manner to get the job done;
  • Must be able to practice a high level of confidentiality;
  • Be knowledgeable and proficient in using the Internet; email; Microsoft Word and Outlook, with advanced skills in Excel.
  • Ability to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends, when necessary.

Normal business hours are Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Will include evening and weekend work during inventory (monthly and annual), special projects, peak periods, holiday season, and to meet deadlines.

Purchasing & Inventory Manager


Hilo, Hawaii (on The Big Island)


Big Island Candies is seeking a Purchasing & Inventory Manager to lead, direct and oversee purchasing, inventory and warehouse functions, in accordance with Company guidelines, policies and procedures.

Essential duties include:

  • Make purchases necessary for the operation of the Company, and maintaining inventory of the items purchased;
  • Negotiate vendor terms and prices, and arrange deliveries using knowledge of schedule requirements;
  • Develop and adhere to systems to track inventory of necessary operating supplies, materials, raw materials and finished goods;
  • Assist in the development of purchasing and inventory management policies; carry out warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures, as well as devise methods to optimize inventory control procedures;
  • Ensure forecasts and purchase orders are effectively communicated to suppliers;
  • Coordinate between accounting, purchasing, warehouse and factory, regarding inventory control and reporting;
  • Foster and develop a strong team of warehouse personnel through recruitment, thorough and consistent on-boarding process, training, coaching, as well as addressing competency gaps with the team;
  • Supervise employees and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the department; carry out supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; taking disciplinary and/or corrective action when needed; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance;
  • Be knowledgeable of purchase orders, receipts of goods, invoices and returns in accounting system; maintain purchasing and account records (inventory & vendor) in Excel spreadsheets, as well as other data entry into computer systems; analyze inventory flow and projections; research, verify and solve pricing discrepancies;
  • Be informed and stay current regarding market conditions, and communicate them to the team; prepare reports on raw-material costs.

Skills, qualificationsandattributes include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in purchasing, inventory, warehousing, supply chainandlogistics management, preferably in food manufacturing operations, or a closely related field;
  • Possess the initiative, and goodproblem solvingskills, to identify, anticipate and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully;
  • Strong organizational skills to efficiently prioritize and plan work activities and time management;
  • Excellent professional communication skills, including ability to express well-reasoned, independent thought; natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organization levels and with external contacts;
  • Be accurate, thorough and detail-oriented in monitoring your own work to ensure quality; apply feedback to improve performance;
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment, and adapt to changing priorities, for example, if work processes require changes to improve efficiency;
  • Must have supervisory experience, including but not limited to knowledge of employment laws;
  • Have the ability to practice a high level of confidentiality;
  • Proficient in using the Internet; Email; Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license; must be able to attain forklift certification, if one has not already been achieved.
