Assistant Controller

Location: 

Hilo, Hawaii (on The Big Island)

Big Island Candies is seeking an Assistant Controller to help in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities and procedures in financial management and accounting, as well as to participate and direct in the preparation and analysis of various financial reports of company financial data.

Essential duties include:

  • Perform daily accounting processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and general ledger transactions;
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual reports;
  • Assist in the preparation and analysis of financial information;
  • Perform monthly analysis of revenue, expense, inventory and budget variances, and identify reasons for differences;
  • Prepare routine financial reports, as well as reports for operational review and decision making;
  • Assist with the completion and preparation of monthly financial reports.

Skills, qualifications and attributes include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting;
  • Certified Public Accountant preferred;
  • Have a minimum five (5) years of experience in tax or audit;
  • Must possess leadership ability, a passion for excellence and strong team-building skills to effectively direct and supervise personnel, and to interact with all levels of management;
  • The desire and willingness to lead, offer direction and opinions, accept feedback;
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles, and be willing to collaborate with team members, or work independently, to incorporate them into existing practices;

Purchasing & Warehouse Manager

Big Island Candies is seeking a Purchasing & Warehouse Manager to lead, direct and oversee purchasing, inventory and warehouse functions, in accordance with Company guidelines, policies and procedures.

Essential duties include:

  • Make purchases necessary for the operation of the Company, and maintaining inventory of the items purchased;
  • Negotiate vendor terms and prices, and arrange deliveries using knowledge of schedule requirements;
  • Develop and adhere to systems to track inventory of necessary operating supplies, materials, raw materials and finished goods;
  • Assist in the development of purchasing and inventory management policies; carry out warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures, as well as devise methods to optimize inventory control procedures;
  • Ensure forecasts and purchase orders are effectively communicated to suppliers;
  • Coordinate between accounting, purchasing, warehouse and factory, regarding inventory control and reporting;
  • Foster and develop a strong team of warehouse personnel through recruitment, thorough and consistent on-boarding process, training, coaching, as well as addressing competency gaps with the team;
  • Supervise employees and be responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the department; carry out supervisory responsibilities, including but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, and training employees; taking disciplinary and/or corrective action when needed; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance;
  • Be knowledgeable of purchase orders, receipts of goods, invoices and returns in accounting system; maintain purchasing and account records (inventory & vendor) in Excel spreadsheets, as well as other data entry into computer systems; analyze inventory flow and projections; research, verify and solve pricing discrepancies;
  • Be informed and stay current regarding market conditions, and communicate them to the team; prepare reports on raw-material costs.

Skills, qualifications and attributes include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Minimum 5 years of work experience in purchasing, inventory, warehousing, supply chain and logistics management, preferably in food manufacturing operations, or a closely related field;
  • Possess the initiative, and good problem solving skills, to identify, anticipate and resolve problems in a timely manner; gather and analyze information skillfully;
  • Strong organizational skills to efficiently prioritize and plan work activities and time management;
  • Excellent professional communication skills, including ability to express well-reasoned, independent thought; natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organization levels and with external contacts;
  • Be accurate, thorough and detail-oriented in monitoring your own work to ensure quality; apply feedback to improve performance;
  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment, and adapt to changing priorities, for example, if work processes require changes to improve efficiency;
  • Must have supervisory experience, including but not limited to knowledge of employment laws;
  • Have the ability to practice a high level of confidentiality;

  • Must have a valid driver’s license; must be able to attain forklift certification, if one has not already been achieved.

Big Island Candies is seeking a sanitation worker (night shift) to perform manual tasks, ensuring the highest level of sanitation throughout our facilities, following current Good Manufacturing Practices and upholding our Quality standards.

Essential duties include:

  • Clean and sanitize food manufacturing production areas and equipment;
  • Other cleaning, sanitizing, mopping, sweeping, vacuuming and dusting tasks, plus other related duties.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Willing and able to follow:
    • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
    • Daily Master Cleaning Schedule protocols;
    • Proper and safe use of cleaners and equipment;
    • Use of personal protective equipment;
    • Demonstrate safe work practices and conditions;
    • Understand and follow oral and written instructions;
    • Work cooperatively with other employees.
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Hours: 40 hours per week: Monday – Friday 3:30 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday 2:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m., subject to operational changes. Weekend, plus possible holiday hours and overtime, depending on operational needs.

Order Processing & Specialty Packaging Manager

We are seeking an Order Processing & Specialty Packaging Manager for our Celebrations Department who will lead, direct and oversee all production operations within the department; supervise, develop and train Leads and other staff members in the areas of production, quality and scheduling, to ensure the timely, efficient, safe and cost-effective creation of high-quality specialty gift products.

Essential duties include:

  • Responsible for overseeing the packing of cookies, candies and other confections (finished goods from our factory) in specialty packaging for each season;
  • Plan and organize employee work and production schedules to meet operational needs;
  • Oversee and uphold quality production standards in accordance with company guidelines, policies and procedures;
  • Forecast and assess inventory, as well as order the necessary products from the Factory, Mail Order department, etc.
  • Provide daily supervision, support and leadership to department Leads and staff;
  • Work with department staff, accounting staff and other departments to ensure correct inventory and accurate inventory reporting;
  • Conduct training, plus evaluate and provide corrective measures, when applicable, to department members, in order to motivate and help ensure individual success, as well as the success, cohesiveness and efficiency of the department.

Qualifications and attributes include:

  • Minimum 3 years supervisory experience in a related capacity;
  • Knowledge of production and process-quality controls, and other techniques for maximizing the effective production and distribution of goods;
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in planning, resource allocation, employee relations, and leadership techniques, in the coordination of people and resources;
  • Good human-relations skills; strong verbal and written communication skills required;
  • Must possess leadership ability and good team-building skills to effectively direct and supervise personnel, and interact with all levels of management;
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of Big Island Candies;
